The 4 Cs — What Actually Matters

A lot of people get the 4 Cs confused. We’re going to make it simple. This works on every budget — whatever you want to spend, we can make it work.

The biggest secret in diamonds: they are sold on how rare they are, not how beautiful they are. Once you understand that, everything below will make a lot more sense.

Color

Graded from D (completely colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow). D, E, F are nearly identical outside a lab — most people can’t tell them apart.
G color is the sweet spot. We recommend it to everyone. Beautiful, white, and the price difference between D and G is significant — for a difference that most people dont even notice.
Why is D so expensive? Because there are fewer of them in the world. Rarity drives the price, not beauty.

Clarity

Measures tiny imperfections (inclusions) inside the diamond — FL (Flawless) down to I3.
An eye-clean stone can grade as low as SI2. That means you, me, as the jeweler, cannot tell the difference between a flawless stone and an SI2 with the naked eye.
The jump from SI1 to VVS can double your price — for something invisible to everyone. That money is almost always better spent on a larger stone or a better setting.
For collectors and investment buyers: VVS and higher grades are rarer and hold value over time. Higher clarity is a meaningful choice if you’re buying for long-term investment quality.

Carat

Carat is weight, not visual size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look completely different sizes depending on cut and shape.
An oval or pear looks significantly larger per carat than a round — more surface area faces up.

Cut

A lot of people say this is the most important part of a diamond. We say: trust your eyes.
If you can save money by getting a Very Good or Good cut instead of Excellent, and it shines just as bright when you compare them side by side — go with that one.
The key is to compare in person. Put them next to each other and see which one catches more light. Your eyes don’t lie. We’ve seen Good-rated cuts outperform Excellent.

Want a whiter-looking diamond in a yellow gold ring? Set it in white gold or platinum prongs. The white metal reflects into the stone and makes it appear brighter. Yellow gold band + white prongs = best of both worlds.

Don’t just look at the grade on paper. Every diamond is unique. Come in and compare two stones side by side — you’ll see the difference (or lack of one) instantly.

Formed billions of years ago. Finite — nobody is making more of them.
“But diamonds aren’t actually rare.” Here’s what people miss: the entire supply is controlled. If a mining company decides not to dig, those diamonds simply don’t exist in the market. Supply is carefully matched to demand — that’s not changing.
That controlled supply is why natural diamond prices have held steady or grown over time. A diamond commemorates something. It lasts. It won’t degrade. And its value holds.

The purpose of lab-grown is to make the unattainable attainable. If your dream ring is out of reach in natural, lab-grown makes it possible. Same sparkle, same craftsmanship, same beauty. It’s the same ring.

Chemically, physically, optically identical to natural. Nobody can tell the difference.
90–95% less expensive. The budget for a 1ct natural could get you a 3ct lab-grown.
So many people have lab-grown diamonds now — you won’t be judged for it. It’s a beautiful stone and you’re going to save a ton of money.

The one thing to know: lab-grown won’t hold its value over time. But honestly — what else goes up in value? Almost nothing. Your car doesn’t. Your phone doesn’t. As long as you know that going in, enjoy it.

If you can afford your dream ring in natural without it hurting — go natural.
If lab-grown is what makes your dream ring possible — go lab-grown and enjoy every second of it.

Why You Should Never Buy a Diamond Unseen

The biggest mistake diamond buyers make is buying from someone who isn’t an expert. An expert can spot problems by holding the diamond, comparing it next to others, and looking at it with a loupe.

What you sacrifice buying online:

A GIA certificate tells you the grade — not the whole story. 10 diamonds with the same specs will all look different in person.
Nobody is comparing your stone side-by-side or checking if inclusions could cause problems.
Diamonds can break. Hardness ≠ toughness. An inclusion in the wrong spot — one hit and it can split.
