Good prongs vs critically worn prongs — side by side comparison

Check Your Prongs.
Save Your Diamond.

The worst part about being a jeweler is when somebody comes into the store in tears because they lost their diamond. We're going to save you from that.

Two Steps That Could Save Your Diamond.

Look at your engagement ring right now. These two steps will tell you if your diamond is at risk.

Testing prong stability with fingernail
1

Feel Each Prong

Take your fingernail and touch each prong. Can you feel it? Is there enough metal there for you to grip with your fingers? If your prongs feel thin or flat, your diamond is at risk.

Checking for loose diamond movement
2

Check for Movement

Use your fingers to try and lift or move your diamond slightly. If your diamond moves at all or is loose, take it off immediately and bring it to your jeweler.

If either test fails — stop wearing the ring.

This is a totally preventable issue. Thin prongs and loose diamonds are fixed every day — but only if you catch it in time. Once that stone falls out, it's usually gone for good.

Not sure if your prongs are okay? Snap a close-up and we'll tell you for free.

When to Get Your Prongs Retipped

You should be getting your prongs retipped every five to seven years. If it's been longer than that, you need to go to a jeweler immediately and have it fixed.
